On GPU Power and Microsoft Scorpio
E3 2016 is over with a lot of fancy news about gaming, Nintendo NX, Sony Playsation 4.5, Microsoft Xbox One S, and above everything else, a big hype was started around Microsofts next console that current goes under the project name Scorpio. According to the video add I just looked at it should be a "limitless" gaming console with ability to generate 4K graphics in 60 fps. Sounds absolutely awesome! BUT, is this realistic, I am not convinced. During the same video it was said that the console would deliver 6 TFLOPS of GPU power. Agreed, this is much higher then current generation consoles, but its less then the recently announced NVIDIA GTX 1070 and 1080 cards. According to this source GTX 1080 delivers 9.0 TFLOPS and 1070 6.5 TFLOPS. The 6.0 TFLOPS promised for project scorpio is just slightly more then GTX 980 TI which delivers 5.6 TFLOPS. The promised memory bandwidth of 320 GByte/second is however on par with GTX 1080 which should helps things a bit. Bottom line, the reason is I dont believe 6.0 TFLOPS will be enough to deliver 60 fps in the 3D games that are modern in 1-2 years is according to many benchmarks I have read the GTX 1080 with its 9.0 FLOPS cannot deliver his in 3D games that are modern today with ultra settings turned on, this makes it very hard to believe that 6.0 TFLOPS will be enough in 1-2 years from now.
My advice to Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo would be to make a super horse powered console with 20 TFLOPS processing power in the GPU, a extremely powerful CPU and loads of memory. This might require the firms to take a loss on the hardware, but this should be easily compensated for on the software side. The first player who makes a console that beats all the others with a huge margin in terms of power will win the game, no serious wants to play their favorite game with the second best graphics.
